An airline passenger who attempted to smuggle 18 pieces of gold, weighing around 1.8 kilograms, into the country by concealing them in his rectal cavity, has been arrested at the Bandaranaike International Airport in Katunayake this morning.
The suspect, a 48-year-old resident of Trincomalee, was arrested by a team of officers from the Police Narcotics Bureau at the airport, acting on information received, upon arriving in the country on a SriLankan Airlines flight from Dubai.
He had cleared customs and reached the bank lobby with other passengers when he was arrested at around 9.00am today (Dec. 26), in suspicion of possessing narcotics.
However, it was later uncovered that the suspect had been concealing 18 gold pieces in his rectum.
The suspects and gold pieces have been handed over to the Customs Office at the airport, police said.
