Police today arrested eight persons engaging in illegal excavations within the Abanganga reserve in Mahawela, with the intention of recovering buried treasures.
The suspects are said to be residents of Galle, Rathgama, Nuwara Eliya, Kotmale, Ampara, Ratnapura and Matale.
Police also seized various equipment and religious items found in their possession during the arrests.
They are to be produced before the Matale Magistrate today.
