
A Sri Lankan national has been arrested by customs officers at the Katunayake International Airport this morning when he attempted to smuggle two gold sticks, worth over Rs 1.3 million, out of the country.
The 56-year-old man, from Kalmunai, was arrested when he was preparing to board Indian Airline flight IX 672 at 9.30am while the gold sticks were found concealed in the frame of his hand luggage.
Customs media spokesman Leslie Gamini stated that the gold, weighing 277 grams in total, is estimated to be worth around Rs 1,385,000.
Further investigations are being carried out by airport customs.
