UNP MP Ravi Karunanayake has resigned from his post in the UNP nominations board following a series of disagreements regarding the nominations for the upcoming Western and Southern Provincial Council elections, reports indicate.

MP Karunanayake informed the party leader Ranil Wickremasinghe in writing of his resignation from the board.

The letter addressed to the party leader also highlights the fact that the District Organizers were not consulted before nominating candidates for the Colombo District.

The letter states that nominating candidates for the Colombo District did not have the same transparency as the other Districts while the local leaders were not consulted when deciding on the nominations.

Meanwhile, a tense situation arose yesterday (February 5) during an UNP MP meeting when discussing the Kalutara District nominations. Kalutara District UNP MP Palitha Thewarapperuma caused a stir when he allegedly attempted to assault the Opposition Leader during the heated discussion.

Thewarapperuma was allegedly angered after a candidate had been nominated by the party even though he had told the particular candidate that he will not be given a nomination.

However, the MP denied having caused a stir during the meeting.
