Man arrested in attempt to smuggle jewellery into the country

A man was arrested at the airport for attempting to smuggle gold and jewellery into the country. Customs officials stated that the jewellery was worth almost Rs.2.5 million.
The Lankan suspect, aged 52 years, was carrying 68 yellow gold chains, 49 yellow gold bracelets, 9 bi-colour rose gold chains, 44 white gold chains, 10 pairs of gold earrings, 2 gold pendants, 4 slabs of paledium and 45g of silver.
The total value of the jewellery was Rs. 2,240,625, the Customs Media Spokesman stated.
The suspect had arrived from Sharjah on an Air Arabia flight at 3.30am this morning (February 7) while the jewellery was concealed in his hand luggage.
Customs officials are conducting further investigations into the incident.
