Mother charged with murdering newborn

Nuwara Eliya Police has arrested a woman who allegedly murdered her newborn baby and attempted to dispose of the body by flushing it down a hospital toilet.
The woman, a 30-year-old resident of Udupussellewa in Nuwara Eliya, had been admitted to the Nuwara Eliya Hospital recently in order to deliver the baby.
However, she had given birth at the hospital’s bathroom by herself and after killing the infant had attempted to dispose of the remains by flushing it down the toilet.
The arrested woman is currently receiving treatment at the Nuwara Eliya Hospital under police custody while police are conducting further reinvestigations.
