Proposal on match fixing gets Cabinet nod

A proposal for the formulation of anti-corruption laws to eradicate the possibility of match fixing in cricket, submitted by the Sports Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage, has received Cabinet approval today.

A committee had been tasked to frame the legislation back in 2012.

The Minister had said the new laws would also be expanded to cover more regulatory powers over the functions of the local cricket governing body, Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

Sri Lankan players and umpires had been at the center of recent match-fixing allegations reported by various media.

However, Aluthgamage had clarified in Parliament that no Sri Lankan cricketer had ever been guilty of match fixing.
