Sri Lanka today addressing the United Nations Human Rights Council today completely rejected allegations that the government is attempting to change the demography in the North of Sri Lanka.

Addressing the 25th Regular Session of the UNHRC in Geneva, Sri Lanka’s External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris stated that prior to the war 75,000 Muslims and 30,000 Sinhalese lived in the North. He added that currently 55% of the population of Colombo comprises non-Sinhalese. Hence he claimed that every Sri Lankan is free to live wherever they please and that there is no efforts to create mono ethic niches in any part of the country.

Addressing accusations of militarization of the North, Peiris claimed that the military is not involved in any civil administration.

Peiris added that there were four major religions in Sri Lanka and that there is an effort to portray sporadic attacks on religious institutions as an overall religious intolerance within the country.

But the Sri Lankan government doesn’t condone such activities and whenever an incident was reported police have taken legal steps to present suspects before the law, he added.
