Australian authorities are investigating whether racism sparked an ugly brawl at a suburban cricket match in Melbourne’s north involving several Sri Lankan nationals.
The violence erupted on Saturday afternoon during a game between Glenroy and the Northern Lions cricket clubs, at Wallace Reserve East, Glenroy.
The match had to be cancelled due to the “melee”, Cricket Victoria said.
Investigators will examine whether racism was a factor.
The Northern Lions cricket club is mainly made up of Sri Lankan players.
Fairfax Media understands a Northern Lions batsman sustained head injuries causing bleeding and had to undergo medical treatment.
North West Metropolitan Cricket Association president Steven Knight said it was investigating the incident and was unable to comment further.
Cricket Victoria’s Rohan O’Neill said a hearing would be held on Wednesday.
Mr O’Neill said neither club had made allegations of racial vilification so far, but it would be questioned as part of the investigation.
He said the brawl was an “unusual occurrence” for cricket in Victoria.
“We have been really active in ensuring that these sports are inclusive of all cultures and abilities, and both male and female participants,” he said.
“We want to ensure that the cricket environment follows that philosophy.”
