Principal of the Puttalam Ananda National College, Sumanasiri Amarasinghe was hospitalised after he claimed he was abducted by a group that assaulted him and attempted to set him on fire after pouring petrol on him.
He told the Puttalam hospital police that the incident took place last night (April 3) at around 10pm on the Puttalam-Anuradhapura road.
After attending a theatre play in the Puttalam town as an invitee he claims he was riding his motorbike back home when a group of four persons arrived in a van and abducted him. One of the members of the group rode his motorbike while two others assaulted him inside the van.
The van travelled 200m before they took him out of the van and poured petrol on his body. Amarasinghe claims that he managed to flee his captors before they set him ablaze.
Amarasinghe only admitted himself into hospital at 1pm this afternoon (April 4).
The Principal is currently involved in a court case at the Puttalam District Court in which he is accused of selling a number of desks and chairs to a scrap metal yard after they were donated to Ananda National College for the benefit of its students.
