Govt hospitals facing a shortage of nurses – Health Minister

Health Minister Maithripala Sirisena says that a shortage of nurses currently exists in government hospitals in the country.
He revealed that the main reason for this situation is due to most nurses preferring foreign employment over local hospitals.
Sirisena said that around 50 Sri Lankan nurses migrate abroad for employment every week and that the number of nurses retiring has also gone up presently.
It is reported that currently there is a shortage of around 10,000 nurses in government hospitals.
The Heath Minister stated that even though nurses are constantly being recruited for the vacancies only a small number apply and that it is a cause for the existing nursing issue in hospitals.
