
A Sri Lankan woman has been arrested by customs officers at the Katunayake International Airport for attempting to smuggle out of the country several pieces of undeclared gold.
The woman, from Kalmunai, was arrested at the Departure Lounge of the airport with 6 pieces of gold buckles and one gold stick weighing 245 grams in total and valued at Rs 1,347,500.
She was preparing to travel to Chennai by Air India flight AI274 at 3.30pm on Friday (11), Customs media spokesman Leslie Gamini said.
The six pieces of silver plaited gold buckles were fitted to the suspect’s hand bag while the stick of gold was concealed in an injection tube, he said.
Following the inquiry held by the Deputy Director of Customs, the gold pieces were forfeited and a penalty of Rs 75,000 was imposed on the suspect.
