A Special Police Unit to deal with religious disputes, as per a directive by President Mahinda Rajapaksa, will be established on Monday at the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs, the Government Information Department reports.
President Rajapaksa, speaking to media head last Thursday (April 24), said that a special police unit will be established under the Religious Affairs Ministry to deal with complaints related to religious activities.
Rajapaksa assured that he will not let any person or organization take the law into their own hands and that this unit would operate similar to the Tourism and Environmental police units that currently operate.
