A Sri Lankan national, who was detained at Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, for attempting to travel using a fake passport, was produced before a CBI judge in Madurai on Saturday.

According to sources, Thomson (25) was detained by immigration officials at New Delhi airport two days ago, when he tried to fly to Brussels (Belgium) using a passport issued in Tamil Nadu. He was handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), who  brought him to Madurai.

Thomson had obtained a fake passport in the name of one Vasu of Thiruvarur. As Thiruvarur district comes under the jurisdiction of Madurai CBI court, he was taken to Madurai.

As it was a holiday, the CBI officials produced the accused before CBI judge M M Krishan at his residence. The judge remanded Thomson in judicial custody till May 12.

As many as 104 Sri Lankan nationals had obtained passports under fake addresses in Thiruvarur during the year 2011-12. As the irregularities were revealed, CBI black listed all the fake passports and alerted all airports in the country. Two persons were arrested in connection with the fraud in 2012. - ENS
