The Special Police Unit to deal with religious disputes, established on Monday at the Ministry of Buddha Sasana and Religious Affairs has to be dissolve before Wesak Poya day (14), the Ravana Balaya organization demanded today.

Speaking to Ada Derana General Secretary of the Ravana Balaya, Ven. Iththekande Saddatissa thero stated that if the authorities fail to dissolve the unit by the Wesak Poya day they would enter the Ministry and occupy the seventh floor.

He added that this demand was communicated to the Ministry today and if no action is taken the organization would have to resort to stronger measures.

Already Muslim MPs have filed many complaints at this unit and these files could be used to show that there is no religious freedom in Sri Lanka at the UNHRC in future, Saddatissa thero claimed.

However the Bodu Bala Sena which had operated in tandem with Ravana Balaya up to now recently hailed the establishment of the special police unit as their victory, claiming that it was them who asked for such a unit to be instated.

When asked by Ada Derana on these seemingly contradictory views of the two organizations General Secretary of Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) Galaboda Aththe Gnanasara Thero said that he doesn’t view the unit as a permanent one and that it needs to operate at least for two years.

Gnanasara Thero added that the BBS will look into the proclamation by the Ravana Balaya as it has been done without foresight.  We will investigate why and under whose knowledge Saddatissa thero made this statement, he said.

Gnanasara Thero completely rubbished the threat by Ravana Balaya that they will occupy the seventh floor of the Ministry adding that these are ‘foolish talks’.
