Five suspects have been arrested on charges of robbing cash, gold jewelry and other valuable property from innocent victims after threatening them with firearms.
The suspects were arrested following raids carried out in Welipenna, Homagama and Uragasmanhandiya areas on information received by officers of the Kalutara Division criminal investigations unit.
They are believed to be responsible for several armed robberies of cash, gold and vehicles.
Police said 2 locally-manufactured firearms, 2 foreign-made firearms, a 12-Bore gun, a hand grenade, 3 motorcycles, a three-wheeler and around 12 pounds of gold jewelry were found in the possession of the arrested suspects.
The suspects, who are residents of Uragasmanhandiya, Homagama and Dharga Town, are to be produced at the Mathugama Magistrate’s Court today.
