The main suspect in the recent abduction of two police constables and the murder of one, who was arrested yesterday, has been killed in a confrontation with police in the Ududumbara area this morning.
Police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana confirmed that the suspect, who was arrested by the CID in Teldeniya yesterday, died in the shootout which took place in Kalugala area in Ududumbara.
The body of the deceased, who is said to be an army deserter, has currently been placed at the Ududumbara Hospital, an Ada Derana reporter said.
Two police constables, on traffic duty, were abducted by a group in a van in Kurunegala on May 5.
One of the officers, constable 41497 Sampath, was shot dead at the Badagamuwa forest while the other (constable 34098 Wijesuriya) had managed to escape from his captors.
Wijesuriya was admitted to the Kurunugala hospital due to injuries sustained in attacks by the suspects.
On May 11, Sri Lanka Police released a sketch of a suspect in the murder, as per a description given by the surviving officer, while a reward of Rs 1 million was announced for any correct information on the suspects.
The main suspect in the abduction and murder was arrested by the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at Teldeniya yesterday (17).
