The Maho-Colombo train driver has been assaulted by a group of passengers at Alawwa bringing the train services on the main line to a standstill, Sri Lanka Railways said a short while ago.
The assault had reportedly taken place near the Alawwa Railway Station over the delay of the train.
The train has been stopped at the location following the incident while police officers had arrived in order to resolve the situation. The passengers have also caused damage to the train, the railway control room said.
The railway control room stated that currently all trains traveling from Polgahawela to Colombo have been halted.
It has been reported that 18 trains operating along the main railway line have been delayed due to a protest being staged by a group of passengers, blocking the track.
