A woman and her daughter have been arrested in Jaffna for cheating nearly Rs 16 million from 17 individuals after promising them employment in London.
Interrogations have revealed that the main suspect had cheated the victims by initially gaining the assistance of an elderly woman in Point Pedro.
The elderly woman had been taking care of four children while the suspect had assured her that the children could be sent to London safely.
The suspect, who had claimed that she was a candidate in the recent Northern Provincial Council election, had repeatedly discussed the matter with the elderly woman and finally managed to persuade her.
The suspect had also requested the elderly woman to find adults seeking employment in London.
The elderly woman had found 17 individuals from 6 families, who had paid Rs 158,000,000 to the suspect after being promised jobs in London.
After the suspect had repeatedly stalled on sending the victims to London, they had surrounded her home while the woman was arrested following police intervention and produced at court.
The woman’s daughter was however released after questioning.
