The Tamil National Alliance (TNA) says it believes that an honourable peace based upon justice and equality must prevail in Sri Lanka and that India’s role would ensure that.
In a letter congratulating India’s Prime Minister designate Narendra Modi, released to media today, TNA leader MP R. Sampanthan says that his party is looking forward to working closely with Modi and the BJP-led NDA government to further strengthen genuine ties between the two nations.
He stated that they also hope to ensure that “violence does not recur in Sri Lanka” and that all Sri Lankans are able to carry on their lives in the territories they live in, based upon equality and justice.
Accusing the Sri Lankan government of continuing to violate the fundamental and human rights of Tamil people in the North and East, the TNA says that the actions of the government undermine all efforts towards reconciliation, permanent peace and harmony.
Sampanthan says that it further creates “an environment that could promote hostility, which the Tamil people certainly do not desire.”
He also says that the actions of the government are clearly indicative of a lack of genuine commitment on the part of the Sri Lankan government to evolve an acceptable political solution.
“We consider it our duty to bring these matters to your notice at the earliest possible opportunity. We do so in the belief that an honourable peace based upon justice and equality must prevail, and that India’s role would ensure that,” he said.
