Sri Lankan Navy personnel arrested 29 Indian fishermen for poaching in seas north of Talaimannar this morning.
The arrested fishermen along their 6 boats were taken to Talaimannar and handed over to the fisheries inspector in charge of the area, the navy spokesman said.
The fishermen are from Rameswaram.
Sesuraja, Rameswaram fishermen president claimed that “The Naval personnel asked them not to fish in the area and other fishermen returned to shore.”
Sri Lanka had shot down a request from Tamil Nadu fishermen to allow fishing in Lankan waters for 70 days a year and to permit bottom trawling.
