Army spokesperson refutes ‘baseless allegations‘

In contrary to false conceptions only a negligible percentage of security forces personnel have been accused of committing crimes in the country, Military Spokesman Ruwan Wanigasooriya said today.
Parties with vested interest are trying to discredit the security forces by bringing about various allegations of misconduct and paint a bad picture of them within the country and abroad, The Defence Ministry stated in a release.
As per recent statistics 916 suspects have been arrested in connection with 586 reported homicide cases in 2013. This number includes 14 serving tri forces personnel and 17 deserters. The total figure of 31 amounts to a negligible 3.38 present. Last year 80 persons were arrested in connection with sexual related incidents that amounts to a little more than 3 percent of the total of 2528 arrests.
Only four serving and one deserter had been arrested in 2013 in connection with drug related offences that amounts to a mere 0.07 percent. Some sections in recent times had raised issues on the involvement of service personnel in drug related crimes but these figures show the real state of affairs and reveal the truth.
The above statistics are a collective figure of arrests of tri forces personnel both serving and deserters. In comparison with previous years the number of arrested service personnel has decreased. In 2011, 169 were arrested on burglary charges while on 124 and 114 were arrested under the same charges in 2012 and 2013 respectively.
Of the 51069 arrests made in relation to drug related incidents in 2012 only 6 persons including 2 deserters were service personnel.
Director/Spokesman of the Media Centre Brigadier Ruwan Wanigasooriya revealed these figures during the weekly press meet held today (11th June) at the Media Centre. He revealed these figures while refuting certain allegations made against armed forces personnel.
