
A group of residents of Kithulwala are currently engaged in a protest blocking the Meerigam-Divulapitiya road, over the recent death of a youth who was shot by police officers while riding a motorcycle.
On June 11, police officers opened fire at Subash Indika Jayasinghe (23) in Pasyala because he allegedly did not heed orders to stop.
The police spokesman claimed that the motorcyclist has tried to run the policemen over when he was ordered to stop by traffic police.
However, Sachin Chathuranga (18) the victim’s friend who was riding on the backseat of the motorcycle, says that police shot his friend at point blank and asked him to say that they did not stop when ordered.
The funeral of Jayasinghe is scheduled to take place at the Kithulwala public cemetery today.
Villagers are engaged in a protest over the controversial incident and are blocking the Meerigam-Divulapitiya road at Kithulwala, causing severe traffic congestion, Ada Derana reporter said.
He stated that close to a thousand people are engaged in the protest.
