The Secretary to the Ministry of Mass Media and Information, Charitha Herath today urged all media organisations act responsibly when reporting incidents that could harm religious coexistence in the country.
He stated that in this age of technological advancement even a minor incident can be highlighted in a large manner.
A minor incident which had taken place yesterday is being released to the public with incorrect information through text messages and rumors, the Media Secretary state, adding, that as a country that is a dangerous situation.
He therefore urged media organizations to refrain from publicizing incorrect information and rumors that may destroy the religious coexistence while warning that if failed to do so it would create a serious social issue.
Mr Herath also stated that spreading of rumors and inaccurate news is a legally punishable crime and that therefore called for media organisations to refrain from espousing communal hatred.
