The JVP today called on the people of the country, regardless of race or religion, to immediately halt all religious clashes and to intervene to help build unity in a peaceful environment.
The situation of religious disharmony which had surfaced in the Aluthgama area has slowly started to spread across the island without being resolved immediately, JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said.
“This did not happen on its own. It was created by extremist groups based on several simple reasons,” he told reporters in Colombo.
He stated that now the situation is spreading out of control and that due to incorrect rumors, gossip and false statements it is escalating instead being controlled. “The end result is that the people who are living together in our country are frightened and suspicious.”
Silva said that the JVP sincerely requests all the people in the country - Sinhala, Tamil and Muslim, to put a spot to these clashes immediately. “Do not allow these religious clashes, end all violence and intervene to build unity and create an atmosphere where all people can live peacefully,” he pleaded.
“At this moment our people should think with their brains, not with their hearts,” he said.
