140 registered elephants in captivity - DWC

Currently there are 140 captive elephants for which the Department of Wildlife Conservation has issued permits, Director General H.D. Rathnayaka told Ada Derana. He added that the DWC has commenced raids to identify elephants being kept in illegal captivity.
Rathnayaka claimed that in 1991 there were 350 registered elephants in captivity of which approximately 92 have died.
Of these captive elephants, around 90 are at the Dehiwela National Zoological Gardens and at the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage, Rathnayaka claimed.
