The Vice Chancellor and several officials of the Rajarata University, who were trapped inside the VC’s office and prevented from leaving by students since yesterday, have been released, Ada Derana reporter said.
The University of Rajarata has been closed until further notice after the Vice Chancellor and several lecturers were taken hostage by a group of university students, who had surrounded the VC’s office and prevented them from leaving.
Around 300 students were reportedly outside the vice chancellor’s officer demanding the lifting of suspensions imposed on 28 fellow students.
Riot police were called in to free the persons held hostage and restore normalcy at the university while security in and around the Rajarata University premises was tightened last night.
