National Freedom Front (NFF) Leader and Minister Wimal Weerawansa says his party has no problem with the visit of South African Deputy President Cyril Ramaphosa, who arrived in the island today to help consolidate peace in Sri Lanka.

The National Freedom Front, a constituent party of the ruling UPFA government, had previously opposed the mediation of South Africa in finding a solution to the national problem.

NFF spokesman Mohammad Muzammil had recently said that if the government allows Ramaphosa’s planned visit, it would compel them take a decision on their future with the alliance.

However, Minister Weerawansa today stated that his party has no issue with Ramaphosa’s visit as Cabinet Spokesman Keheliya Rambukwella had said the Deputy President of South African is visiting the country as a “tourist.”

Even the Deputy Minister of External Affairs Neomal Perera had stated that the South African Deputy President is visiting in order to meet the President and several others, he said.

The Construction, Engineering Services, Housing and Common Amenities Minister further stated that if any other process is undertaken during the visit, the party will notify its stance. 

Ramaphosa has been appointed South African President Jacob Zuma’s Special Envoy to help consolidate peace in Sri Lanka.

In a statement on Sunday, Ramaphosa had said he would meet the Sri Lankan government, opposition parties and citizens during his visit to the country.

“What we are going to do there, we are going to listen to the Sri Lankans,” he said.

“We will also try to help the Sri Lankans with the Truth and Reconciliation process, their own constitutional reform and make sure Sri Lanka does indeed become a stable country where they will enjoy human rights,” he said.
