Two persons have been arrested for allegedly intentionally hitting and killing a police officer on duty with a motorcycle in the Udupila area in Meegahawatta, police said.

A Police Constable (PC) on duty at the Udupila checkpoint was killed in the collision, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.

He stated that police officers on traffic duty at the Udupila Junction had signaled a speeding motorcycle to stop, however the rider had ignored the order and continued to travel at a high-speed.

Therefore the police officers had informed the Police Constable on duty at the Udupila checkpoint regarding the speeding vehicle.

The Constable had signaled the motorcycle to stop at the checkpoint, however the rider had disobeyed the order and instead intentionally hit the policeman before continuing on his way.

The Constable, who was critically injured in the collision, has succumbed to injuries, the police spokesman said.

However, the motorcycle rider and his passenger have been arrested, police said. They are reportedly residents of Ambalangoda.

Meegahawatta Police have launched an investigation under instructions from the Kelaniya Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP).
