The estate workers in Rakwana, Ratnapura today boycott their duties in protest over police inaction to apprehend an individual who is alleged to have molested a 14-year old girl from the same area. A source confirmed to Ada Derana that Minister Arumugam Thondaman has too instructed the members of the Ceylon Workers’ Congress (CWC) to advise estate workers to refrain from their daily duties. Over 500 estate workers are currently gathered in Rakwana town chanting slogans against the police. The protesters charged that the suspect responsible for the crime is still at large, yet the police have not obtained any specific leads in the case. The incident was taken place on or around 20 July, according to police. However, a senior police officer told Ada Derana that the suspect has surrendered to the Kahawatta Police station a short while ago through an attorney. He will be produced in Pelmadulla Magistrate’s Court, today.
