Police constable Suminda Saman, who got the attention of media over an alleged argument with a Deputy Minister, has been indicted in a bribery case filed against him in the Colombo High Court.

In this case, the constable and another police officer have been charged for accepting bribe from a woman, who apprehended for possession of illegal liquor bottles, on 25 December, 2009.

When the case was taken up for hearing, counsel Anura Maddegoda appearing on behalf of the accused pointed out that this case is filed in order to get revenge from Constable Suminda for imposing a fine sheet to the driver of the Deputy Minister.

High Court Judge Lalith Jayasuriya fixed dates for the next hearing on 1 September, and enraged the accused on personal bail of Rs. 500,000 and a cash bail of Rs.25,000.

The police officer was assaulted and his car set on by an unidentified group of people in the 20-acre area, Bombuwala in Dodangoda. Ruling party member, Deputy Minister Hemal Gunasekera had been in the spotlight as the constable; in his statement to the police said that he believes the Deputy Minister was behind the attack.
