The Ministry of Law and Order today informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court that it is not necessary to provide personal security for the President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, Upul Jayasuriya, as there has been no serious threat to his life.

A report prepared by the Secretary of the Ministry of Law and Order was submitted to the court when the case filed by the Bar Association president, seeking personal protection, was taken up for hearing this morning.

Jayasuriya, attorney-at-law, had lodged two complaints with the police stating that his life is in danger, as he was followed by two unidentified persons on two occasions, last month.

However, submitting the said report today, Senior DIG (Western Province) Anura Senanayake stated that state intelligence units have confirmed that there has been no clear threat to Upul Jayasuriya’s life.

Raising objections to this, attorneys representing the BASL president informed court that the threats to their client have still not subsided.

After considering the facts, Colombo magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya stated that the security which has been provided is sufficient and postponed the case October 26.

He also requested for a report on the progress of the investigations on the aforementioned date.
