
Police today arrested eight suspects along with a haul of illegally imported foreign liqour and cigarettes worth around Rs 100 million at a residence in Borella.
The suspects were arrested in a raid carried out by officers of the Police organized crime and anti vice squad, acting on information received by the Inspector General of Police (IGP).
They were involved in a racket of illegally importing cigarettes and alcohol into the country, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.
He stated that the suspects had rented out a residence on Sheffield Road, Borella at a cost of Rs 175,000 per month to use as the base of their operations, which were been carried out for the past year.
Police discovered over 26,000 bottles of liquor including expensive brands of whisky and brandy while the stock of cigarettes is estimated to be worth over Rs 5 million.
