The Supreme Court has decided that the annual animal sacrifice ceremony at the Munneswaram Badhrakali Temple, Chilaw can be held after obtaining a permit, the Ada Derana reporter confirmed. This permit could be obtained from the Chilaw Pradeshiya Sabha.
The Supreme Court on August 29 postponed the verdict of the Munneswaram Kovil priests appeal against the Appeal Court judgment on animal sacrifice for 3 September.
The bench comprised Chief Justices Mohan Peiris, Justice K. Sri Pavan and Buwenaka Aluwihara.
The trustees and Poosaries of the Kovil filed the petition at the Supreme Court to get permission to perform animal sacrifices under an annual slaughter permit, challenging the verdict delivered by the Appeal Court, in 2013, with respect to animal sacrifices near religious places.
The Court of Appeal ordered the police to act against the priests, if animal sacrifice holds within the Kovil premises, violating the terms of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance.
