The National Sangha Council (Jathika Sangha Sammelanaya) (JSS) today urged the Pradeshiya Sabha in Chilaw not to issue a permit for the animal sacrifice ritual of the Munneswaram Badhrakali Temple.

Ven. Bandirippuwe Vineetha Tissa Thero, a member representing the JSS, in written handed over the request letter, on this regard, to its Chief Management Assistant M.P. Kurukulasuriya.

The animal sacrifice ritual of the Munneswaram Badhrakali Temple is supposed to take place on 9 September.

The Supreme Court yesterday ruled that the annual animal sacrifice ceremony can be held after obtaining a permit from the Pradeshiya Sabha.

The trustees and Poosaries of the Kovil filed a petition at the Supreme Court to get permission to perform animal sacrifices, requesting to revoke a verdict delivered by the Court of Appeal, in 2013, on this matter.

The Court of Appeal ordered the police to act against the priests, if animal sacrifice holds within the Kovil premises, violating the terms of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Ordinance.
