UNP Parliamentarian Ajith Mannapperuma was injured and hospitalised today due to an accident between 39-40 kilometer posts on the Southern Expressway, police spokesman SSP Ajith Rohana said.
The accident had reportedly occurred when the MP’s driver had lost control of the jeep causing it to collide with the protective railing.
The wounded MP and his driver have been admitted to the Nagoda Hospital in Kalutara for treatment, the police spokesman said.
Hospital sources revealed that Mannapperuma’s right leg was amputated below the knee due to the injuries sustained in the accident.
Mannapperuma was sworn in as the new UNP MP for the Gampaha District in June last year, filling the seat left vacant by the death of Dr. Jayalath Jayawardena.
