The Monaragala police have not yet identified the group of people who allegedly abducted a university student in Maduruketiya area in Moneragala.
Four university students who were campaigning for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), for Uva Provincial Council elections, were assaulted by the group travelling in a Defender Jeep without bearing number plates. One of the students was abducted and was later left on the roadside after further assault, it was reported.
Meanwhile, Campaign for Free and Fair Elections (CaFFE) issuing a statement says “Although attacks by armed men travelling in unmarked Defender Jeeps have become common in Moneragala this is the first abduction and assault these men have made. This indicates that they are gradually increasing their level of violence as the election draws near. CaFFE has written to the Commissioner of Elections and the IGP to take immediate steps, on these matters,”
