Delegation arrives in SL for Maldives-Lanka Joint Commission meeting

A Maldivian high level government delegation has departed to Sri Lanka to attend a Maldives-Sri Lanka Joint Commission meeting, foreign media reports.
The delegation included Maldivian Foreign Minister Dhunya Maumoon, Fisheries and Agriculture Minister Mohamed Shiny, Education Minister Aishath Shiham, as well as senior officials from various government ministries.
The meeting is to be presided over by Maldivian Foreign Minister Dhunya Maumoon and Sri Lankan Foreign Minister G. L. Peiris.
Maldives-Sri Lanka Joint Commission was established in 1994 to enhance bilateral relations between the two countries.
Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa had, during his visit to Maldives in June this year, thanked Maldives for their support for Sri Lanka in the international platform and said that cooperation between South Asian countries was not just beneficial to the countries of the region but that it also helped maintain world peace and stability.
He said that the Lanka-Maldives Joint Commission should be utilized to enhance bilateral relations in a systematic manner. His visit saw the strengthening of ties between Maldives and Sri Lanka in the health, education, youth development, sports, culture, crime prevention, security and military training.
The Joint Commission meeting is to be the 6th of its kind, the last having been conducted back in 2006.
