The United People’s Freedom Alliance has secured a significant victory in the Moneragala District after polling more than 58 per cent of votes and securing 9 out of the 15 seats in the district.

The UPFA received 140,850 votes (58.34%) compared to the United National Party’s 77,065 votes (31.92%). The UNP secured only 5 seats in the district.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) obtained 14,960 votes and managed to secure 1 seat.

Independent Group 5 with 3,612 votes (1.50%) beat Sarath Fonseka’s Democratic Party (DP) for the fourth highest votes, however both parties failed to secure any seats.

The final district results show a clear victory for the ruling party in the 2014 Uva Provincial Council election, which was widely seen as a crucial test for the party ahead of Presidential polls scheduled for next year.

Uva is widely seen as a bastion of support for the governing party, which won 72 percent of the vote in the 2009 provincial elections and secured 25 of 34 seats in the Provincial Assembly.

However, the UPFA claimed a narrow win over the United National Party in the Badulla District, according to the final district results which show the ruling party winning 10 out of 198 seats.

The UPFA obtained 209,056 votes (47.37%) while the UNP received 197,708 votes (44.79%) and managed to secure 8 seats from the district.

The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) secured 1 seat after obtaining 20,625 votes (4.79%), thereby giving the opposition an equal number of total seats as the ruling party.

Meanwhile the Democratic Unity Alliance, a coalition of Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC) and All Ceylon People’s Congress (ACPC), received 5,045 votes (1.14%) in the Badulla District, however failed to secure any seats.

Minister Wimal Weerawansa’s National Freedom Front (NFF) and Sarath Fonseka’s Democratic Party (DP) also failed to secure any seats in the district despite receiving 4,835 and 3,202 votes respectively.

This gives the UPFA a total of 19 total seats (including 2 bonus seats) in the Uva Provincial Council while the UNP has managed to secure 13 seats. The JVP has secured 2 seats.
