
Three persons have been arrested at the Katunayake International Airport for attempting to smuggle foreign currency worth over Rs 20 million out of the country, a customs official said.
The suspects had arrived at the airport this morning in order to board a flight to Singapore when they were searched based on a suspicion, customs spokesman Leslie Gamini said.
Undeclared foreign currency, including Euros and Swiss francs, estimated to be worth over Rs 20 million were found in the possession of the suspects, who were attempting to smuggle the currency out of the country by concealing them in their rectal cavities.
The arrested men are residents of Jaffna, Negombo and Matale while airport customs are conducting further investigations.
