Senior BJP leader Subramian Swamy says that Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Mahinda Rajapaksa have spoken and agreed on the transfer of five Indian fishermen, who were sentenced to death by a Sri Lankan court.

Swamy also informed that the two leaders have agreed to process the transfer of the five Indian fishermen to an Indian Jail.

“Namo & Rajapaksa spoke on the phone yesterday & agreed to process papers & transfer 5 fishermen convicted to Indian jail. I am vindicated!” he posted on Twitter.

Meanwhile the Indian High Commission in Colombo is expected to file an appeal against the death sentences awarded to the five Indian fishermen on charges of  drug trafficking in the Sri Lankan Supreme Court on Monday.

According to reports, top legal experts had been finalised by the Indian High Commission in Colombo to appear on behalf of the five Tamil Nadu fishermen.

The Tamil Nadu government had earlier released 2 million Indian rupees for meeting the legal expenses.

The Tamil Nadu government officials have been working in close coordination with the central officials to pursue the case of five Indian fishermen in the highest court of Sri Lanka.

“On the orders of Chief Minister O Panneerselvam, a copy of the October 30 judgement of the Colombo High Court sentencing P Emerson, R Wilson, P Augustus, J Lanklet and K Prasath of Rameswaram had been procured,” a release from the state government said earlier.

On October 30, the Colombo High Court sentenced to death the five fishermen on charges of allegedly smuggling heroin into Sri Lanka. They were arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy in November 2011.

India has, however, categorically said that the five are innocent and added that an appeal will be filed in the top court in the island nation.

Fishermen in the state have been agitating against the Lankan court verdict while political parties too have sought steps to secure the release of the five.
