Two Sri Lankan men have been arrested at the Mattala Rajapaksa International Airport this morning for attempting to smuggle 29 pieces of gold, worth around Rs 14.5 million, into the country by concealing it in their rectal cavities.
Both suspects are 57-years-old and are residents of Katugastota and Colombo 10, customs media spokesman Leslie Gamini said.
They were arrested by Customs officers at the Arrival Lounge of the Mattala Airport after arriving from Dubai by flight FZ 551 at around 6.45am today.
He stated that one of the suspects was concealing 13 pieces of gold slabs, weighing 1.3 kg and valued at Rs 6.5 million, while the other had 16 pieces of gold slabs, weighing 1.6 kg and worth over Rs 8 million.
Investigations are being carried out under the supervision of Customs Director JMS Peiris.
