The Department of Elections today announced that the Presidential Election in Sri Lanka will be held on January 08th, 2015 while nominations are to be called on December 08th, 2014.

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday (20) signed the proclamation declaring his intention to hold a Presidential Election seeking another term.

The Elections Department said it has received formal notification of the Proclamation by President Rajapaksa “expressing his intention of appealing to the People for a mandate hold office, by election, for a third term.”

Measures were then taken to publish by the Gazette extra ordinary the date of nomination, the place of nomination and the date such elections will be held, at the earliest.

The Central Committee of Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP) yesterday has unanimously decided to nominate President Mahinda Rajapaksa as the party’s candidate for the forthcoming Presidential election in January next year.

The decision was taken at the meeting held on Wednesday (19) at the Presidential Secretariat.

Meanwhile former Health Minister and SLFP General Secretary Maithripala Sirisena today announced his decision to contest as the Common Opposition Candidate.
