Import duty on big onions increased by Rs. 15

The import duty on big onions has been increased from Rs. 35 to Rs. 50 per kilogram with immediate effect, Minister of Cooperatives and Internal Trade Johnston Fernando said today.
Therefore traders would have to pay an additional Rs 15 as import duty per kilogram of big onions.
Big onion farmers in Dambulla had recently staged a protest over the inability to sell their crops and only withdrew from the agitation after Minister Janaka Bandara Tennakoon assured them that the government would purchase the big onions for Rs 90 per kilogram.
