The Presidential Commission to Investigate into Complaints Regarding Missing Persons has received in excess of 19,806 complaints inclusive of approximately 5,000 complaints from relatives of missing security forces personnel since the establishment of the Commission on 15 August, 2013.
The commission also has commenced to conduct public sittings to hear cases of missing in Vavuniya District from 14th to the 17th of December 2014. The sittings will be held at the Cheddikulam Divisional Secretariat on the 14th and 15th December and in Vavuniya Divisional Secretariat on the 16th and 17th December.
The commission held its previous public sittings in Northern and Eastern provinces covering Jaffna, Mannar and Batticaloa Districts.
The three-member committee comprised by Mano Ramanathan, Priyanthi Suranjana Vidyaratna, and former High Court Judge Maxwell Parakrama Paranagama, was appointed by under the provisions of section two of the Commission of Inquiry Act.
The Commission says it has held regular meetings with the International Committee of Red Cross (ICRC) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and has obtained their views and experiences gained in other parts of the world particularly on matters relating to missing persons at the end of a conflict.
