The Indian police have seized 90 kg of ganja and arrested a 50-year-old man who attempted to smuggle the contraband to Sri Lanka via sea route.
Acting on a tip off, a special police team, led by Sub Inspector of Police Sivasubramanian of Kovilankulam police station, conducted a search in the forest area between Othathevarkottai and Kanikkur on Monday and seized the contraband.
A police press release here on Tuesday said the accused, identified as T. Ramar alias Ramachandran (50), had hidden the ganja in 40 packets and kept it in five bags in the forest area for smuggling.
Enquiries revealed that the accused had received the ganja at Sayalkudi on December 4 from an unknown person, who hailed from Thondi.
Police arrested the accused under the provisions of Narcotics and Psychotropic Substances Act on Tuesday. He was produced before a Magistrate Court and remanded in judicial custody, the release said. (The Hindu)
