The Department of Meteorology says that the low pressure area located just off the southeast coast of Sri Lanka has intensified into a depression and it is expected to move very closer to Sri Lanka resulting in very heavy rainfall throughout the country today.
If the movement continues reducing of prevailing rainy weather can be expected by tomorrow onwards. But windy conditions will continue for some more days as the system may intensify further when it will be moving away from Sri-Lanka, the department said.
Cloudy skies and intermittent showers or thundershowers will occur over most parts of the country while very heavy falls (more than 150 mm) are also likely at some places.
Strong winds (up to 60-80 Km/hr) can be expected at times over the island and over the sea areas around the island.

“Winds will be North-Easterly and speed will be 50-60 kmph. The sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Kankesanthurai via Galle and Pottuvil may be very rough at times and dangerous as the winds can strengthen up to 80 kmph at times. The other sea areas around the island will also be rough at times,” the Met Department said.
