Deputy Leader of the United National Party (UNP) Sajith Premadasa said he received information that a mudslinging campaign was underway against him in a bid to spread false rumors saying he had quitted the party and extended support to President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
In a letter addressed to the Election Commissioner, Premadasa has requested the authorities to take every possible measure to stop this mudslinging campaign what he explained as a conspiracy to sabotage his political career and the successful election campaign of Common Candidate Maithripala Sirisena.
The Deputy Leader has also requested Election Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya to assist him to get the backing of print and electronic media to announce his stance; regardless of all campaigns in connection with the forthcoming Presidential election has come to an end since last Monday midnight.
“A stock of defamatory posters was being printed against me saying that I had quitted the party and extended support to President Rajapaksa. As a politician who respects the political ethics and rules, hereby, I say, I always backed the Common Candidate and the Common Opposition at this time’s Presidential election,” Premadasa said in the letter.
