The Governor of the Central Province, Tikiri Kobbekaduwa, has decided to resign from his position. The Governor announced his decisions after meeting with the Mahanayake Theros today.
Therefore he is expected to tender his resignation to the President tomorrow (19).
Kobbekaduwa was appointed as the Central Province Governor in 2005 while his term in office was scheduled to end in December this year.
A group of 34 Central Provincial Council members had recently met the Governor and submitted affidavits expressing support for Thilina Bandara Tennakoon to be appointed as the Chief Minister of the province.
Tennakoon along with CPC Opposition Leader Ranjith Aluvihare met with the governor claiming that the majority of the Councillors supported the decision.
