President Maithripala Sirisena has instructed the Inspector General of Police (IGP) to appoint a team of officers to investigate the attack incident involving UNP Parliamentarian Palitha Thewarapperuma.
Minister Rajitha Senaratna says that the President will always uphold the rule of law and has instructed the IGP to take stern action over the incident.
MP Thewarapperuma has been accused of making a UPFA Pradeshiya Sabha member Murugan Pushpakumara kneel down on the road and assaulting him, during the recent opening of a SLFP office in Agalawatta, Kalutara.
Former Minister and UPFA MP Mahinda Samarawinghe, at a press briefing yesterday, called on the President and Prime Minister Ranil Wickramasinghe to take immediate action against the MP, who he claimed led the mob which also attacked the party office.
Samarasinghe also lodged a complaint with Police Headquarters on last evening, and requested that they carry out an investigation into the incident.
